Travel Memories Monday – Seville, Spain

Located in the south of the country, Seville is the fourth largest city in Spain – and is my favorite Spanish city! I’m completely enamored with the mix of Moorish and Catholic aesthetics that pervades the city. The Moors ruled this region of Spain from the 8th to 13th centuries, and where defeated during the Spanish Reconquista in 1248 by the forces of King Fernando III. While Seville doesn’t have an Alhambra like Granada or a Great Mosque like Córdoba, the Moorish legacy is still very present and nicely complements the Seville of today. Similiar to my post a couple of weeks ago about Venice, I’ve chosen my 10 favorite pictures of Seville to show why I adore this city.

So glad you wrote about Seville! When we were still back in London we took a train trip through Spain, from Seville to Madrid and then over to Barcelona. There was just something so magical about Seville – the mix of Moorish and Catholic architecture, like you said, plus we found some really amazing street art, a real urban feel, but above all it was the balmy evenings filled with wine, tapas and music right on the plazas…We loved Barcelona too, in an entirely different way, but Seville was just so magical…Great post!

There is just something about Seville. I wasn’t to crazy about the rest of the places we visited in Spain, but Seville was just this perfect mix of old and new that made me not want to leave – magical is the perfect word to describe it!

Oh, I love Seville. I almost moved there once. But then I decided for Valencia… Anyways, Seville is the 3rd best city in Spain (that’s my subjective top). I really have to go back someday… Their patios are the best I’ve ever seen.

Oh, what Spanish cities are 1st and 2nd? I think Seville is my #1 in Spain, but I’ve only been to 3 other cities, so it isn’t a terribly long list :-)

Looks really amazing! I love Moorish architecture too. When I went to Spain, it was at the end of a long, hot trip and we had very little money. we were so tired that we ended up just spending 5 days in Granada (after Barcelona) instead of going to Cordoba and Seville, too. I wish I had gotten there, but at the time, staying in Granada was the right choice, and it was great! My husband is finishing a B.A. in Spanish and really wants to go to Spain, so I’m happy I have Seville to look forward to now!

I had to choose between Seville and Cordoba – so I’ll definitely be back to visit Cordoba…really want to see the famous mosque there! You know from my interview that I wasn’t too crazy about Spain, but Seville was the highlight. It’s the only place we visited that I would love to go back to.

Beautiful photography! Sevilla is one of my favorite cities too. I was fortunate to visit there twice–once in 1995 and once in 2008. I believe that my first visit was soon after they hosted the World Expo. The city was in amazing shape then! I hope to return again someday. :)
